Agustín Gómez García

Agustín Gómez García (28 May 1870 – 8 December 1926) was a Chilean teacher, journalist, writer, businessman and politician who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile.

Born in Castro, he studied humanities at the Conciliar Seminary of Ancud and later attended the Pedagogical Institute in Santiago, qualifying as a Spanish teacher in May 1892. He taught grammar, literature, philosophy and Latin at institutions including the Instituto Nacional. He also worked as a journalist and writer and became involved in several industrial and commercial enterprises.

Gómez initially belonged to the Conservative Party, but left it in 1906 and joined the National Party, participating in the presidential campaign of Pedro Montt. He had previously served as a municipal councillor of Santiago from 1902 to 1906 and as first mayor of the city from 1902 to 1903.

He was elected deputy for Ancud, Quinchao and Castro for the 1906–1909 legislative period. He subsequently represented Santiago for three consecutive terms, from 1909 to 1917. During the 1909–1912 term, he served on the Permanent Commissions of Elections and Public Instruction, and during the 1912–1915 and 1915–1918 terms he continued serving on the Permanent Commission of Public Instruction. He was stripped of parliamentary immunity on 5 January 1917.

Outside Parliament, Gómez was involved in philanthropic, commercial and civic organizations. He was among the founders of Vega Central and created the Sindicato de la Leche in 1905.

He died in Santiago on 8 December 1926.
